On Nov. 5, multimedia artist Lawrence Lek gave a public talk hosted by the Princeton Art Museum to discuss the research interests and questions that guide his practice, focusing in particular on three films: “Sinofuturism (1839-2046 AD)“ (2016), “Geomancer” (2017), and “AIDOL” (2019). Lek is the 2020 Sarah Lee Elson International Artist-In-Residence.

Les seves obres inclouen el llargmetratge de CGI AIDOL As in Lawrence Lek’s previous film Geomancer from 2017, the plot is of secondary importance, merely providing a trail for ideas to follow. The camera is on Diva in this futuristic, partly recognisable – jungle, temples, stadium – and partly abstract, alternative universe. Lawrence Lek is a London-based artist, filmmaker, and musician who unifies diverse practices—CGI, audio-visual performance, gaming, and fiction—into a continuously expanding cinematic universe.

Geomancer As part of a new partnership, Firstsite is screening selected works from Film and Video Umbrella’s (FVU) impressive back-catalogue based on the gallery’s yearly programme themes. In 2017/2018 Firstsite is exploring identity and the second film to be shown in this series is Lawrence Lek’s Geomancer (2017).

As the two winners have to work to the same theme, this year it was “Neither One Thing or Another”, the contrast is often illuminating. Selected for the Jerwood/FVU Awards 2017, Lawrence Lek used his £20,000 bursary to make the film Geomancer..
